North Georgia June 15-30, 2024 Forecast

Hot & Dry First, Then Hot & Stormy

Highlights

  • Hot and dry this upcoming week, with poor air quality

  • More typical summer pattern the last week of June (hot + storm chances)

Forecast Discussion

A ridge will continue to build into N. Georgia this weekend, before expanding and strengthening across the Mid-Atlantic and New England this upcoming week. There are at least moderate probabilities that this ridge will strengthen to record levels over the Northeast, as N. Georgia sits positioned to the southwest of the ridge’s center. After some very isolated storm chances this weekend, the southwestern extent of the ridge will likely impose very dry conditions across North Georgia through at least Wednesday, due to sinking motion (subsidence) associated with the ridge. A couple of shortwaves will undercut the ridge from the Atlantic during the late Wednesday to Friday timeframe, but it appears the ridge will remain rather strong over the N. Georgia region. Thus, chances are highest that a dry/hot pattern will persist across the forecast area through early Friday.

A strong ridge will extend southwestward into North Georgia this week.

Daily storm chances will likely creep back into the forecast starting around next weekend. As the Northeast ridge weakens and Bermuda high pressure strengthens offshore, a more typical summer pattern will probably emerge the last week of June. Meaning, N. Georgia will experience toasty/humid conditions with daily afternoon/evening storm chances. It doesn’t appear that Bermuda ridging will strengthen enough westward to suppress convection over N. Georgia, but we’ll certain have to monitor any sort of trends that emerge in model guidance.
